I was in need of a place to store my growing collection of cookbooks and I also wanted to protect the back of my sofa. To kill two birds with one stone, I decided on acquiring a console/sofa table. However, I really wanted the length of the table to match the length of my sofa, so I figured it would be best to build it myself.
I visited Ana White’s site and found the perfect solution for my needs: the Rustic X Console. The plans were pretty straight forward to follow, but I really struggled building the table. I purchased quite a few warped boards and it was very hard to get everything square and flat. This made for a very frustrating experience.
Below are several in progress photos:
Two tools that really helped us finish this project are the Kreg Pocket-Hole Jig
and my Rockwell JawHorse. I highly recommend each of these tools. In fact, I love my Kreg Jig so much I recently upgraded from the K3 Master System to the K5 (I really do not build much to warrant the upgrade).
For the finish, I used Rust-Oleum’s Early American stain and I applied two coats of Vermont Natural Coatings PolyWhey Furniture Finish (I love this stuff. It is not super smelly like your traditional wood varnishes).
I ended up dropping the X on my console table out of laziness (that and I was tired of dealing with the warped wood). I am happy with the finished project. It provides way more storage space than I had originally anticipated.
September 2015 Update!
My sister and I recently built the matching Rustic X Coffee Table. You can check out the build details here!
