Quick and Easy Expandable Dust Hose Holder

Hi everyone, today I sharing a quick tutorial on how to make a hose holder for an expandable dust hose.  I recently purchased the 4″ expandable dust hose from Rockler.  I bought the 21′ long hose that compresses to 3 feet.  In its expanded form the hose can be hard to manage.  I started brainstorming ways to store the hose neatly and cheaply.  Continue reading for the full tutorial.

 

I whipped up a quick hose holder for my expandable dust collector hose. I’m using a 1 1/8″ x 48″ wooden dowel to support the hose. I’m tempted to make a second version with a larger base. 🤔 I wanted to consume very little floor space, but the hose holder is not stable with the original base (just a square 2×6). I added 10 lbs to the base and that made a big difference. Tools and Supplies

• Wooden dowel rod – 1 1/8″ x 48″
• 2×6 scrap
• 4 caster wheels
• 1 1/8″ Forstner bit
• Wood glue
• 50″ clamp
• Ruler or center finder
• Drill press or handheld drill
• Barball plate (optional to prevent tip over)

I tried to use as much supplies on hand as possible.  I had to purchase a dowel rod and caster wheels.  The project cost me somewhere between $8 – $10 to build.

How to build an Expandable Dust Holder

This is an easy project that can completed within an hour (not including drying time for the glue).

Step 1: Cut the base

Cut out a square from a scrap 2×6 board.

(Optionally, you can dress up the edges of the base with a router and chamfer bit.)

Step 2: Find the center of the base and drill a hole

With a center finder or a ruler, mark the center of the base. Drill a hole about a 1/2″ deep with a 1 1/8″ Forstner drill bit.

Step 3: Install the caster wheels

Install the caster wheels on the side of the base without the hole.

I purchased the cheapest set of caster wheels that I could find at Home Depot.  In hindsight, I wish I purchased casters with brakes.

Step 4: Glue and attach the dowel rod

Apply glue to the hole on the base and insert the dowel rod.  Clamp the rod to the base and allow the glue to dry.\

PROJECT UPDATE:

I removed about a foot from the length of the rod.  I noticed when the hose rests on top of the rod (not smooth edges) it strains hose.  I shorten the length of the rod to remove that stress. I would hate to put a hole in my hose!

Step 5: Add weight to the base (if necessary)

The dust holder is prone to tipping over.   Adding weight to the base will help stabilize it.  Slide a few barbell plates down the dowel rod to prevent the holder from tipping over.
